Crabb Bits: Dust Storm, Sonny Lott

On The Subject Of....

Phoenix went through yet another Big Dust Storm (or Kaboob for those who like to use idiot words to describe a dust storm) last night, their third major storm this summer.  This one was only a half mile high, unlike the mile high boomer that hit July 5 and the 4,000 foot high one on the 18th.  Kind of sad that I haven't been out there to enjoy seeing these big dusters in person but summer isn't over yet and Allegiant Airlanes are still having some nifty summer deals to go out to Phoenix or Vegas.

Another stage collapse to tell you about, another big thunderstorm and micro-burst toppled the stage at Pukkelpop in Belgium killing five people and The Smith & Westerns losing their gear in the process.  This is the forth stage collapse this summer and the people behind the Pukkelpop Concert canceled the rest of the show.

Sonny Lott is one of Iowa City's most beloved musicians and all around good guy.  He played drums for hippie dippy throwbacks Divin Duck in the 90s and blues legend Patrick Hazel but I remember him most for him being the janitor at NCS/Pearson in the late 80s and we got to chat up a while and traded off some music tapes for listening.  Known for his dreadlocks and Bob Marley's inspired clothing, I lost track of him when he moved back into playing music full time but there's a benefit for Sonny this Sunday at The Mill.  Sonny is battling cancer and part of proceeds will go to his rising medical costs of battling the big C.  Featured performers are Joe Price, Tony Brown and a few others and maybe even surprise appearances from Bo Ramsey or Patrick Hazel might be at hand?  Fun starts at 6.

The ratings for this month haven't been much for the new blogs but The Brains Blog still gets most of them, and My GF Thinks I should Blog More Often too.  Coming in September will be Superstar September to which I pick ten of my favorite songs from my favorite bands.  I figured it would be easier than just trying to do a anthology of all albums and try to tie it all together.  With me being here half the time and over at the GF the rest of the time, I really don't have much time to really sit back and listen to everything, including if I drive the old Purple Piece and it's shitty speaker system to which must be solar powered.  When it's daylight the back speakers work but when the sun goes down they don't and only the front work.  I'd replace them but since the car just went over 286 thousand miles it doesn't seem to be cost effective.  So I drive it till it will piss me off to the point that I'll leave it on the tracks and watch the 11:15 Union Pacific run it down the track.

With Greg The Vinyl King and Starman all getting married this year and been paying more attention to their better half and life in particular, it has been noted that perhaps now that Nicole is here that I will probably start not reporting much in terms of music news and top ten songs of the week but I still love music that much to continue to blog about it and with her blessing too.  After all this is who she fell in love with.  Fact of the matter is that the past 10 plus years of bargain hunting and finding the two dollar CD has opened many more avenues of music that I would have never considered buying full price.  Some of the bands figured enough for me to listen to their output, while others went back into the donation bins.   As long as Half Priced Books continues to stock the dollar bins, I'm sure there'll be a few more things that will be picked up and listened to. But as there's a beginning so shall be an ending but the good news is that I don't know when the end will be.  So till then, I wouldn't worry about Crabby hanging up that keyboard just yet.

Hi Crabb. We got hitched July 30th and had a nice ceremony. My first and her second marriage. Anyway, not much happening on the music scene, but I did find the first three Steve Miller Band CDs on ebay at a good price. I really like the debut and Brave New World. I don't know why I didn't have these back in "The Joker" days because they are far superior. Well, take care and I hope you tie the knot with your main squeeze someday. Any woman who is into the good music is a keeper.

Congrats Starbro and all the best for ya. I'm sure Nicole would like to walk down the aisle one of these years. She knows if we're in the hood, she suggest Half Priced Books to see what I can find. I had Children Of The Future on record but dammed if I can find it anywhere. Perhaps I'll get a replacement copy. I think side two had the better songs although Key To The Highway goes along in a snail's pace. Brave New World is classic, Sailor isn't too bad either. Rock Love was a turd album and haven't heard anything from Recall The Beginning. The Joker, the album was spotty and I never did buy it.

TAD: we call Purple Car Frankenstein cuz my brother has resurrected it from the dead. GF don't like it very much and it drives like the wheels are ready to fall off but it does have AC, unlike the other car. Car refuses to die! ;)

Crabby: HITDANBACK.com is ... intresting, tho I gotta tell ya I can't quite figure out where he's coming from. There's a sorta anti-gay/pro-gay flip-flop undercurrent goin on there, & if it's sposta B funny I can't quite get a handle on it cos I don't know where Dan's at. Is he really a woman? & if so (or even if not), why's there ads 4 gay porn videos on his(?) site? This put me a little off balance, as U can probly tell....
I DID laff, but I could only take about 3 pgs of his(?) scandal sheet B4 I gave up. But I read every word.... Thanx 4 the tip....
...Also, your Dscription of Frankenstein has 4ced me 2 do a post on cars I've owned, so look out....

Hey TAD, I came across Hit Dan Back via Facebook. Dan Brickley (his real name) is kind of like the E news taboid stuff but with a more MA feel to it. He seems to be more attracted to dicks than chicks.

Ole Purple Frankenstein seems to have a life all of its own and hindsight tells me I should retire the damn thing due the fucking back speakers not working after dark (I guess the sun shining on the exposed wires might have something to do with that). And if you don't have the driver's side door all the way down, it will not let you out of the car, find that out the hard way. Me and it goes back about 12 years and many places we drove to, but it does need to be retired. Maybe after summer since the AC works better than the other car i have. ;)

Hello R S Crabb, It was great reading your blog on Sonny Lott, he's my father. We were reunited with him some 4 months ago after 40+ years, & recently traveled there the 1st of September to see him, what a blessing that was. We missed the benefit on 8/21/2011 as the majority of his family lives in Dallas, TX, but were excited to see him when we did. Some of the many folks that came out to The Mill & also the backyard jam they had at my father's place a few days later were Tony Brown, Patrick Hazell, Scotty Hayward among others. It was such a joy to meet EVERYONE! The love shown over the years to him warms my heart. His 70th birthday bash will be at a church (not sure of the name but when I mention that, most folks there know the church I'm speaking of). Anywho, it's great reading all of the wonderful things many have said of my father, he truly is a wonderful being, and we are so thrilled to have all been reconnected to him (he has three daughters, I'm the oldest (49), and also my brother, who would have been 50 this year (he passed in 2002). Thanks again, and feel free to keep in touch, I'll be sure to periodically check out your blog from time to time (^_^) Vikki (Lott) Hoke

Hi Vikki

Great to hear from you and thanks for reading my little posting. I haven't seen your dad Sonny all that much since I live up around Cedar Rapids and don't get into Iowa City too often like I used to. But I remember talking a lot of tunes when Sonny used to work up at NCS (now Pearson) back in the late 80s early 90s and we used to trade music too. I did get to see him play a few times when he was with Divin Duck. I kinda lost touch of what happened to him till Jim Musser talked about the benefit that was held for Sonny. They had a great turnout. Sonny is a great guy. Thanks for stopping by again. All the best :)

I love Celtic Thunder and anxiously awaited the release of "Storm". It's has its moments, but it's not as good as I had hoped it would be.
