Beaker Street Playlist 10/23/20

Jerry Jeff Walker passed away in the parade of people leaving this world this year.  He was 78.  Also Matt Blair of the Minnesota Vikings died Thursday from Demetria caused by too many hits he received while playing for the Vikings.  He was 70.

And Viola Smith, the female Gene Krupa who kept on drumming till she passed away in her sleep from Alzheimer's Thursday.  She was 107.  Even with the dammed Alzheimer's Viola continued to drum.  There'll be noone like her.

And this is not Viola Smith.

A mixed bag. Clyde has discovered Enya and the odious Yardbird song from Birdland.   Highlights include the Outlaws, SRV and King Crimson.   Eagles, CSN and Pink Floyd a nod to Coporate classic rock radio.  And I still love Sookie Sookie.

Tyler Vincent: Compiled the list.

This week's passings was Johnny Nash.  A former teen idol that recorded a bunch of Don Costa arranged pop songs of the 50s and 60s, then discovered Bob Marley and The Wailers and used them for his landmark Hold Me Tight LP for JAD in 1968.  The album was one of the early Reggae albums and paved the way for The Wailers to become better known later on died Tuesday.  He was 80.  Bob Marley and company would return to help Johnny land the number 1 song I Can See Clearly Now in 1973.  Peter Tosh helped Johnny on the Hold Me Tight but it was Marley that supplied the songs on ICSCN.

Perhaps the major blow, was Eddie Van Halen, finally losing his battle with cancer aged 65.  In 1978, Van Halen dropped their first album, a record that echoed the sounds of the First Montrose album, but Eddie's guitar wizardry made VH one of the all time best debuts, beginning with the minor hit Running With The Devil and You Really Got Me.  What made the Van Halen albums so great was that they ran a half hour full of music.  1984, showed Eddie could play keyboards as with the number 1 hit Jump.  David Lee Roth left and Sammy Hagar, who sang on the first two Montrose albums took over on 5150.  The Van Hagar years suffered from too much filler and a nod to ballads, and the wheels fell off on Balance.   Gary Cherone came on board for the lackluster Van Halen 3.  David Lee Roth would return later and VH made A Different Type Of Truth in 2012, the last VH album, which echoed the glory years, Micheal Anthony was replaced by Eddie's son Wolfgang.  While the reviews were so so, I actually enjoyed that album, tho  John Shanks is no Ted Templeman and the recording was subpar.

Nevertheless, Eddie Van Halen reinvented the lead guitar with his amazing finger runs on the fretboard.  Templeman writes and say that Eruption, done as a exercise was not slated for the album and Eddie always thought that album version could have been better, this guitar piece had every guitar player trying to figure out how to play it.  If you had the 8 track version, Eruption would lead into Feel Your Love Tonight, whereas it led into You Really Got Me.   That 1.58 would be the beginning of heavy metal guitar.   Eddie would help Michael Jackson on Beat It and Thomas Dolby on another song. Eddie is one of the best.  He passed on Tuesday.

Five Star Mud Games:  1967 Pro Bowl in LA  1/22/67

East 20  West 10

It never rains in southern California but Girl let me warn ya, when it pours, man it pours..Albert Hammond

Usually football games you think of is played in nice sunny weather after the super bowl.  Ah, the days when they played in Honolulu.  And sometimes Los Angeles, but on that rainy afternoon, only 15 thousand showed up to see the late great Gale Sayers run all over the east defense but the West turned the ball over six times, the East picked off Johnny Unitas three times. and Bart Starr once.  Floyd Peters being named best defense player.   While it rained all night and most of the game, the Coliseum held up fairly despite the elements.

Notes:
BOC gets ETI, another lost classic, Ozark Mountain Daredevils have Standing On The Rock and what's this?  Enya's Orinoco Flow, which shocked a lot of listeners but in theory,  does fit in the Beaker Street type of music.  A varied amount of light rock, light jazz and a couple songs to celebrate the harvest moon.  Guess which ones.
